I Created a Media Package for Landfall Games

March 2022 marked the beginning of a month long project for me, the goal of which was to create something that mimicked the duties of a community/social media manager. With a little workshopping, my idea became a media package for Landfall Games.

I chose this project because I enjoy building customer relationships, and creating content directly tied to a community. (I was also heavily inspired by Bungie’s community manager, dmg04.)

Over the course of the month, I created two company blog posts, two company newsletters, and six social media posts. Along with these final products, I wrote a handful of documentation mapping my process.

All of these items can be found below.

Why Landfall Games?

Landfall is a prime target for this type of project. At this moment they don’t have a blog, and aren’t super active on social media other than TikTok. Using the content I created, Landfall could start a blog, a newsletter, and have a handful of tweets to post.

Besides the content I created, I’ve always been intrigued by community managers for video game developers. Landfall’s fantastic CM was taking a break early this month, leaving space for me to try my hand at it.

Project Challenges

Throughout this month of project-building, I’ve gained experience in media creation, as well as writing in a professional tone. This process was challenging, but nothing that I couldn’t overcome.

Blog Post Challenges

I began this project by writing the first company blog post, inviting all of the challenges it brought. The biggest of those challenges was a lack of content from which to draw.

Because I don’t work for Landfall, I used their existing social media to gather information about the projects they’re currently working on. I pulled mostly from Twitter and TikTok and managed to collect enough talking points to fill the first blog post. I wrote about Haste’s development.

My goal with these blog posts was to use current information and not rewrite talking points for old news. Unfortunately, Landfall was taking a social media break during the first few weeks of this project. I had no current content to pull from, other than what I wrote about Haste.

I overcame this challenge by creating content for myself. In my first newsletter, I outlined a community event that would contain enough content to fill a second blog post and newsletter.

Newsletter Challenges

Much like the blog posts, content to draw from was slim for newsletters. Besides Haste’s development, the only real news was from April of 2021, when Landfall released four games at once. One of those games was the full release of TABS.

TABS was in development for two years before its full launch in April of last year. The timeline was perfect for it, so I created a month-long art contest that would have the winner chosen on April 1st.

In short, I overcame this challenge by creating a month-long community event to celebrate the release of a game.

Final Thoughts

This was way more fun than I expected it to be. I enjoyed the feeling of overcoming challenges, as well as creating content for a company. I do wish I had found more current news to fill out the blog posts and newsletters a bit, but they turned out well anyway.

If I were to do this project again, I would nail down the exact topics I could cover before I settled on a company. I chose Landfall because I knew they were working on a new game and that I could provide value to them by covering its development. What I didn’t anticipate was the social media break they took at the beginning of March. Other than Haste, I had very little in the way of leads to write about, which is why I created a community event.

With that said, I’m glad I had this opportunity, and I look forward to doing real work like this in the future.
